Following on from the announcement that I have an agent, I'm very proud to announce my first novel, The Hollows, which will be published by Angry Robot on 8th November 2022.

Here's the announcement from The Bookseller, made last Friday:

Angry Robot snaps up 'brilliant' folk horror from debut novelist Church.

Angry Robot has snapped up a “brilliant” folk horror book from debut author Daniel Church. Simon Spanton, editor, acquired world English rights for The Hollows from Anne Perry of the Ki Agency. It will publish on 8th November 2022. It is set in the Peak District village of Barsall, and promises “agonising suspense, unforgettable characters and an enemy who will linger in your imagination for many years to come”. Church said: “It was clear from the start The Hollows couldn’t have found a better home. Angry Robot were the first publisher to get in touch about publishing the book, and the passion and excitement Simon Spanton and the rest of the team have shown for it has just been awe-inspiring. I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted to be working with the Angry Robot team.” Spanton added: "I can’t remember the last time a horror novel hooked me so immediately and then left me wriggling on that hook quite so happily until the last page as when I first read The Hollows. Along the way Daniel Church spins the stories of four brilliant female characters and pulls a thread linking folk horror to cosmic terror through three terrifying nights in a brilliantly realised Northern hill town. It’s an astonishing achievement; we’re thrilled to have Daniel join the Angry Robot list and can’t wait to publish The Hollows."

So what's the book about?

Well, here's the back cover blurb:

In a lonely village in the Peak District, during the onset of a once-in-a-lifetime snow storm, Constable Ellie Cheetham finds a body. The man, a local ne’er-do-well, appears to have died in a tragic accident: he drank too much and froze to death.

But the facts don’t add up: the dead man is clutching a knife in one hand, and there’s evidence he was hiding from someone. Someone who watched him die. Stranger still, an odd mark has been drawn onto a stone beside his body.

The next victims are two families on the outskirts of town. As the storm rises and the body count grows, Ellie realises she has a terrifying problem on her hands: someone – or some thing – is killing indiscriminately, attacking in the darkness and using the storm for cover.

The killer is circling ever closer to the village. The storm’s getting worse… and the power’s just gone out.

You can pre-order The Hollows here, or on Amazon.
